Experience Pentecost

Experience Pentecost

Ever wondered what Pentecost is all about? Want to find out what it's about? What is the story behind Pentecost?

Pentecost is one of the important festivals in the Church calendar. It remembers how the Holy Spirit came to Jesus' disciples and still comes down on us today. It continues a Jewish festival when Jews would travel to Jerusalem to give thanks for God's love.

St. Laurence Church has set up a series of 6 stations which can help explain and understand the ongoing story of the Holy Spirit. Experience Pentecost is interactive, enabling visitors to get a real sense of what this Christian season is all about. The church is open to visitors every day from 9am until about 4pm. Please come along and experience Pentecost for yourself.

Waiting

Waiting

Jesus told the disciples to wait in Jerusalem for the Holy Spirit. They were still amazed about the events of Easter. In the weeks after Easter Jesus had spent time with his friends. Then one day he had gone with them up a mountain, he prayed for them and had gone back to Heaven. How would the disciples be feeling, together in their homes, remembering Jesus' promisesbut unsure of what the future held? How do we feel when we have to wait for something, exam results, a job offer, a new baby in the family? There is anticipation and excitement, but also a sense of worry.

Receiving

Receiving

The Holy Spirit did not come in a parcel delivered by the Post Office, it didn't come from Tesco or Aldi, it didn't come by car or in any other way you can imagine something coming to your house. It came like a very strong wind and in tongues of fire which settled on the disciples. Nowadays, for most Christians it comes in a much quieter way but still with the same power. How would the disciples have felt after their wait when they received the Spirit in this way? How would we feel if this happened today? You might expect them to be even more startled and we would probably be shocked too. But that is not what happened at all.

Telling

Telling

On the day of Pentecost the disciples were together when God sent the Holy Spirit as tongues of fire carried on the wind. We'd probably be filled with fear, but the disciples knew this was the gift that Jesus had promised them. They didn't hide; instead they began telling everyone about Jesus. And everyone could understand what they were saying even though many came from far away in different countries. That day about 3000 people became followers of Jesus.

Sharing

All the disciples used to meet together and shared everything. There was no:'that's mine' or 'you can't have that. They helped each other and their was enough for everyone. Noone was in need. The leaders chose some people to do the practical jobs like sharing the food while others continued to tell people about Jesus. Just like today, people had different jobs to do, but all were equal. Noone thought their job was more important. Everybody was special as they worked to spread the news about Jesus.

Growing

The other religious leaders in Jerusalem became angry about the followers of Jesus. They tried to stop them meeting and telling people about Jesus. One day they killed one of the disciples, Stephen. It was a very bad time. The disciples began to leave Jerusalem to escape. It seemed that the story of Jesus might end. But as the disciples spread out to other towns, cities and countries, they carried on telling the story of Jesus and so people all over the world started following Jesus.

Doing

One of the stories about the work of the disciples is about a man who couldn't walk. He sat outside the church and begged for money. One day 2 disciples, Peter and John, were walking along the road talking about Jesus. When they reached the man, he asked them for money. Peter told the man that he had no money but he would help the man. Peter remembered how Jesus had helped people; he told the man to stand up and walk. He helpedte man get up and the man began to jump and dance. All the people were amazed at what they had seen.
