Christmas services 2014

Christmas goes on.....

Christmas Day marks the beginning of the 40 days of Christmas and not the end. When a baby is born, that is just the beginning of discovering what it means to have this new baby. In the same way, right up until 2nd February, we continue to explore what it means for us that Jesus was born, that God came to earth to be a human, that he is Emmanuel, God with us. It's a very big topic, so 40 days is nowhere near enough time - but we give it a go!

What was going on over these last days leading up to Christmas Day? Here's a quick review of some of the services

December 21st:  instant nativity

This was a chance for all to join in - whether as a shepherd, angel, sheep or donkey.  And they did! See the photos below (more to follow in the Photos section of the website). Much fun was had in acting out the story of that first Christmas alongside pondering what it means for us now in 2014 going on 2015.

Christmas Eve: 4 p.m.  Christingle Service

St Laurence's was very full for this popular service. Over 300 adults and children crammed in.

There was the delight of the moment when all the Christingle candles were lit, the church lights went out and we sang 'Away in a manger'. The light of Christ coming into the world.

And what was this all about? Why the toy turkey?

All the different voices of Christmas were telling us they wwere the most importnat part of Christmas. This was the turkey saying he was the most important part of Christmas, as did the Christmas pud, Santa, the Christmas tree and carol singing. All agreed that the most important part of Christmas is the birth of Jesus (to whom we sang Happy Birthday).

And there was the marathon carol singing on Saturday 20th:
