Heritage Lottery Fund Launch

St. Laurence’s Church, Measham wins a Heritage Lottery Fund grant!

St. Laurence’s has been awarded an initial Heritage Lottery Fund grant for its stained-glass window project.

Made possible by National Lottery players, the grant will be used  to develop and prepare a restoration plan for structural features of the church and to provide an activities programme to make the heritage of the church more accessible to the local community, schools and visitors.

The project, which starts immediately, aims to restore stonework around some of the windows in the church and secure the structure of the architecturally interesting West Porch, while an activities programme will seek to tell the stories behind some of the stained-glass windows, upgrade the church’s website and provide educational trails and a guide book to enable children, young people and adults to gain a better understanding of the features of ‘this hidden gem of North-West Leicestershire’.

St. Laurence’s is a focal point for the local community and host to a number of community groups. It dates from the late 13th century and has been a place of worship ever since.

Development funding has also been awarded to help the church progress plans to apply for a full grant at a later date.

Mr  Brian Abraham of St Laurence’s Parochial Church Council said “We are delighted to have the initial funding and the opportunity to be awarded further funding to help with the work of restoring this beautiful church which has been the centre of Measham’s religious life for nearly 1,000 years. Some of the stonework has been here since the church was built and we are  looking forward to the exciting journey which the Heritage Lottery Funding has enabled us to embark upon”

 About the Heritage Lottery Fund

Heritage Lottery Fund grants programme applications are assessed in two rounds.  A first-round pass is given when HLF has endorsed outline proposals and earmarked funding. A first-round pass may also include an immediate award to fund the development of the project. Detailed proposals are then considered by HLF at second-round and as long as plans have progressed satisfactorily and according to the original proposal, an award for the project is confirmed.          Thanks to National Lottery players, we invest money to help people across the UK explore, enjoy and protect the heritage they care about - from the archaeology under our feet to the historic parks and buildings we love, from precious memories and collections to rare wildlife. www.hlf.org.uk.  Follow us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
